ALLAHABAD: The National Eligibility Test (NET), conducted by the University Grants Commission(UGC), was conducted peacefully at 39 test centers of the city on Sunday. Of these, 13 centers were at various departments of Arts and Commerce and Law faculty of AU while the rest 26 test centers were spread across different colleges and schools of the city.
Coordinator UGC-NET, Prof Jagdamba Singh told TOI that the test was conducted peacefully at all the test centers. "We got good support from the police, fellow faculty members and employees along with the team of observers for which we are thankful," said Prof Singh. In all, there were 26378 aspirants enrolled for the test out of which 21978 appeared in paper-I and II, informed the coordinator. With 4400 candidates opting to not give the test, a total of 88.3% attendance was recorded, he added.
The NET test would witness a tough competition among aspirants. The competition would be intense in subjects like history, Hindi, education and political science. As compared to the NET exam held in December 2012, the number has fallen by around 2,500 candidates. However, this time, Hindi subject has left many other traditionally popular subjects behind to take the top spot as the most preferred subject among the aspirants. While history has remained at the second place, education is on the third spot in the list of most preferred subjects among the aspirants. In the NET examination held in December 2012, a total of 28,824 candidates had applied.
A team of observers, both external and internal, visited every test center and evaluated the preparations. Among the team of 15 external observers of UGC, senior faculty members of different universities monitored the test while AU had also constituted an internal team of observers, informed Prof Singh.
